Bullheads Beware!

Last Memorial Day weekend the PLIA Board introduced a new event, a Bullhead Fishing Tournament! We will continue this event in 2019, both on Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.

The spring bullhead tourney begins on Friday, May 25th with the weigh-in on Sunday, May 27th at noon. No pre­ registration is required, and everyone is invited to catch as many bullheads as possible from Upper and Lower Post Lake then bring them dead or alive to the PLIA Building before the noon deadline for the weigh-in. There are categories for adults and children to win prizes. Adults win cash prizes for the greatest poundage of bullheads.

Children 13 and under win gift prizes for greatest poundage of bullheads. Some catches are taken for smoking and eating. The remainder of the tournament catches will be given to the REGI Raptor Center for food for the birds. So, this event is a win/win situation.

This is NOT a catch and release tournament! Our goal is to reduce the bullhead population on the Post Lakes to help improve our fish habitat and the support the survival of the walleye that the PUA has been stocking during the past several years. Snack and beverages will be served along. Join the excitement as the totals are tallied. Volunteers can sign up to help through SignUP.com. Watch for the request in the spring. This event is a great family activity and a good kickoff to summer on the Post Lake Chain!

More than 450 pounds of bullheads were caught and removed from the waters on Memorial Day weekend. The total weight for the catches on Labor Day weekend, 2018, was 396 pounds. First prize of $100 for the adult catch went to the Techlin-Patrick team with 53 pounds. The second place of $75 went to Greg Kleineschay. Third place of $50 for 33 pounds was awarded to those fishing off Bowen Pier. Since we all love and protect our lakes these are not competitions but wins for Post Lakes.

In the under 13 class, Alice Sticha won a tackle box and fishing pole. No boys entered the contest. For the record, the fishers reported success from these baits: chicken livers, nightcrawlers, bacon, beef wieners, and cheese. You can choose one of these or add to the list of successful baits.
